Melksham Campus May Be Completed By 2014

Melksham Campus has moved a step closer to reality following the purchase of Melksham House and the Blue Pool site for £250,000. The new sports centre will have a leisure centre, library and swimming pool and is the resut of months of wrangling between various factions in the town.
Melksham House was owned by Cooper Tire and Rubber Company. Melksham Town FC and Melksham Rugby Club also have their grounds here and may well have to look for other premises.
Jonathon Seed, Melksham Area Board Chairman, said: "We see the development of the new campus as an important step in the regeneration of Melksham Town Centre and as a vital facility."
The campus could be completed by early 2014 and will be overseen by the Melksham Shadow Community Operations Board, which has been set up by the Melksham Area Board (keep up here) to develop plans for the development. Monthly meetings will be held in Melksham. Does anyone know if they will be public or not?
Its chairman, Roy While said: "We will work closely with the community and the council to ensure we have the best facility for our town."

Well its fairly clear that a fairly large house complete with a large amount of land is worth significantly more than £250k. One that apparently houses a muriel valued alone at £10k. Im not questioning WCC's spending on a car park - albeit totally wasteful and embarrassing for all concerned when staff managed to park and see for decades before they moved in, but I am after speaking to 2 people in the property business with all the facts and laws surrouding it all suspcious as to why its sold so cheap, yes, when it appears to breach property sales law.
Your right, WCC are always going to be under fire for something, and whilst they consistently make awful decisions in a vast majority of cases its hardly surprising is it.

ReportClassic "tails they loose, heads they don't win" for Wiltshire Council, eh? WC have also been getting rather a lot of flack for spending a lot on a car park at Shurnold, and now they appear to be under questioning for spending too little on Melksham House?? There are many reasons why a property's value and sale price may be lower that one might guess ...

ReportNot interested in the politics of it all and whose in charge or not, just hope it all pans out to be a good thing once its completed and satisfys everbody and more who currently use the site.
One Question I do have, and its something I hadnt even considered until 2 different people ( both connected one way or the other to finance & propertys ) pointed out to me today whilst in town - how was that site sold for only £250k??? Surely the tax man must be keeling over at the stamp etc not being collected as its being sold massively under market value? Its a reasonably good point!!

ReportI've written a - err - very full answer to this thread; it won't fit in my 4k character allowance, so I've posted it at http://tinyurl.com/3b3km4o (reads better on a wider window too). Suggest follow ups here, though ;-)

ReportDMJ, I hope you're able to complete the survey that came out in the Melksham Independent News this week. Let's hear your voice in what should be in this community campus! I know I'll be letting the board know my thoughts.
I'm also pushing for individual surveys sent to pertinent groups. I use The Blue Pool, for instance, and I think there should be a separate survey geared toward those who actually use the facilities. If such a survey doesn't happen, I also plan to make it a point to make mention specifically of those facilites that I have a bit of experience with. Same goes for all the other organisations that will be using the facilites.
We all need to make our voice heard in what we want in this campus...before plans are set in stone, rather than complain after it's been done.
So...if you're not happy who's on the Campus Shadow Board, who would be on your Dream Team to plan this campus?
