Melksham Winter 2011
It's a very different from the snow frost and ice we had last year; in fact the forecast for the next few days heralds a cold snap, with temperatures going down to -oneC, but with the bonus of clear and sunny skies to cheer us on our way.
Let's hope the cold doesn't kill off all the spring plants peeping through; the hedgerows are full of snowdrops and daffodil bulbs are coming up in all the gardens and along the rural roadsides.
Here are some tips for keeping warm in cold weather; especially important for the elderly and ill in our community. If you know someone who is at risk in harsh weather conditions, spare a moment to go and check on them.
To keep warm and well during periods of cold weather:
* Keep curtains drawn and doors closed to block out draughts.
* Have regular hot drinks and at least one hot meal a day if possible. Eating regularly helps keep energy levels up during winter.
* Wear several light layers of warm clothes.
* Keep as active as possible.
* Wear boots or shoes with a good grip on them.
* Put grit or cat litter on your path to stop slipping on ice.
If you have to drive in icy weather, here is some advice for motorists.
