A new style of theft to hit Melksham?

I wonder of this has happened to anyone else in the Melksham area? Some time over New Year kind folk syphoned nearly 700 litres of oil from our oil tank. The only reason we found this out was yesterday when the central heating went off at about 9pm in the evening. Now we are without heating and hot water and will be until we can get another delivery of oil.
Our tank is visible to the road, so it means that whoever stole our oil would have been in full view of houses down both sides of the street. But no-one seemed to hear or see anything unusual so who knows when the theft took place?
With the price of oil at a painful all time high, it sticks in my throat somewhat to have to fork out another £500 for heating oil when we had calculated that the previous delivery would last until spring.
And tomorrow the temperatures are going to hit minus levels again – thanks guys! At least we are (relatively) young and healthy and can survive easily for a couple of nights without central heating but what would have happened if we had been elderly or frail? This anti-social behaviour is vile; I hope the police are able to arrest the theives before they inflict any damage on vulnerable people.
Happy New Year!
