  Today is the day that the UCAS website crashed as thousands of A Level students flooded online to see if they had got their university places. With the rush on to beat the rise in tuition fees coming in next year, 9,000 more school kids applied to university this year than in 2010. Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol and Warwick have already sniffily announced they will not be entering clearing this year as throughout the country university...

• Melksham Oak Now "Officially" Open

  Shelley Rudman, winner of silver in the skeleton bob in the 2006 Winter Olympic Games, was at Melksham Oak School last week to open the school "officially". Although pupils and teachers have been at the school since July 12 last year, the official opening was held to mark the first anniversary. Shelley unveiled a plaque in the school hall and the ceremony was broadcast live to classrooms so all the pupils could see it.

• Upgrade for The Mill School in Potterne near Melksham

  Matt Hill, owner of Forward Thinking Solutions with his business partner Dave Stanley, have recently bought The Mill Preparatory School in Potterne to prevent it from closure. They have grand designs for the school, especially since they have now bought the surrounding 15 acres of land, on which they are hoping to base a riding school, an outward bound venture and other events, both local and corporate, throughout the year.   In addition to my writing about new jobs for Melksham people in 2011, I've just heard that the Gazette and Herald and The Wiltshire Times have got together with Wiltshire College's commerical arm, Wiltshire Enterprise, to find 100 new apprentices in just 100 days. To kick of the search, 100 balloons were let off at Trowbridge College to symbolise the 100 apprentices. There are lots of young people in Melksham who are desperate to...
